Dear Eliza
I have just
received your letter of Jan 8th
and at your request answer it im-
medietly [sic] although I have not
much to write it is no harm to
keep the correspondence up at
least. Tell [--] Briggs that
Elmore is here but men go away
[---] time he is only a dead beat
on the government [-----]. Ellen
Briggs was here to day with
Elmore’s wife and if she comes
to morrow I shall send [-----]’s
pin cushion home which is a
very nice one I can assure you
shelton must have told [--] Smith
a da[--] lot of lies for Shelton

Seignor and I have considerable
talk every time I go down town
He shakes his head and say junior
is a bad boy perhaps he has never
Read in the Bible where it says
The sins of the The Farther [sic] shall
be visited upon by the son even unto the
third and fourth generations son do
thee likewise follow into the path
of [--] For then and Hell shall
be the reward. Your mentioning the
Fair ~~fair~~ puts me in mind that
we cant [sic] find Stamps enough for
all the fairs here there is a big
Fair going on in town. [----] to-
nights at [---]sic Hall a Catholic one
I was to late for a ~~one~~ pass to night
but shall get one to morrow night
and go. I shall get a furlough
as soon as convenient I dont [sic] like
to be so forward about it as I
might get sent to my Regt instead

Opperate [sic] on me like moving
Down to the Farm did on poor
Folks excuse me for being person
this time and your next letter
will be answered as prompt as this one
